Design and reflection

I have chosen the theme ‘Enterprise’ because I do not like to have too many graphics and pretty designs surrounding the boxes. I chose it because it is simple and I like minimal designs. This theme also allows me to have multiple drop-down menus unlike some of the other themes. This theme is also completely customizable, I am able to pick and choose the colour scheme I’d like as well as any graphics I could put in the background or headers. I chose it because it doesn’t look too elaborate that it would take the attention away from the actual blog. The colour scheme also is plain because I am a man of simple tastes. I feel that it looks professional and elegant.

Framing and composition

In terms of photography techniques there are hundreds to take and adapt them to a video shoot. Rule of thirds, the technique of dividing the picture in to thirds. A picture or video using the rule of thirds can give the sense of direction and creates balance. I like to use these techniques to plan video shoots to give myself a sense of direction and how I will go about filming. A composed shot is always gives you an upper hand at editing and the finished product.

Photography projects and learning about all kinds of framing and techniques over the years has made me more aware and creative with the camera if I was shooting video or a photography shoot. Planning a video shoot requires more than just going out and filming it. Extensive planning and composition is key if you want to produce a good artistic piece of film or video. I also feel that DSLR cameras are far better equipped to film an artistic piece of video. I have used Canon EOS 500d, 550d and 7d cameras to shoot videos and the outcome of the footage has been sublime. The Canon cameras are also used predominantly for photography but they serve more than one purpose and are more than capable of producing fantastic footage. The music video Earthquake by Labrinth feat. Tinie Tempah was entirely shot using Canon EOS 7d cameras. Take a look at the music video.

My Favourites

My favourite…

Directors:

I’ve been a fan of Shane Meadows‘ work since the introduction of This Is England on the big screen. When he bought This Is England to the small screen he added an extra dimension to the show. I’ve previously explained in a post about Shane Meadows work. He perfectly portrays life in the 80’s. I think the best thing about him, in my opinion, is that he is not afraid to exploit sensitive and sometimes shocking matters in This Is England. His way of directing and the standard of his shows have set the bar so high that other Drama programmes struggle to get the same amount of viewers, not to mention the amount of people talking about the programme and the matters that it bought up.

In terms of television directors and television producers I only have one more person in mind that is one of my favourites, J.J Abrams. The person that bought us one of the biggest TV dramas of the 21st century, winner of numerous Television awards, LOST. J.J Abrams is not only one of the head writers of Lost but also an executive producer of the show. He has now gone on to direct blockbuster films Super 8 and Star Trek

In terms of film directors I would say Martin Scorsese and David Fincher are some of my favourites. Martin Scorsese, the man that bought us unforgettable and award winning films such as Taxi Driver, Raging Bull, Goodfellas, The Departed and Shutter Island. I like Scorsese’s trademark style of starting the film from the middle or end of the film. His lead role always seems to be corrupted, violent or a bit of an outcast from society, these characteristics make a great film.

David Fincher is also another favourite director of mine. He bought us unforgettable dark thrillers such as Se7en, Fight Club and Panic Room. But also gave us stylish drama films such as The Curious Case of Benjamin Button and The Social Network which earned Fincher academy award nominations for best director in 2008 and 2010. Fincher is a favourite of mine because his style and tone to his films make you enthralled and gets you at the edge of your seat.

TV Shows:

I have always been a big fan of LOST since it’s explosive beginning in 2004. Although many people became lost in LOST, I watched all 6 series from start to finish. I was captivated by the mysterious island and the characters. It was original and mysterious, it always had me second guessing about what would happen next but then completely twisted at the end of the programme to keep you going for the next episode.

Prison Break was another favourite of mine before it concluded. Another original drama in my opinion. Just like LOST it keep me second guessing and eager to see what happened next. Every week I was eager to tune in for the new episode. Although the name makes the show a little predictable it was never the less fantastic TV that I thoroughly enjoyed watching Michael Scofield and Lincoln Burrows lives twist and turn to evade the system and eventually regain justice.

Production companies:

Endemol is without a doubt one of the most influential television production companies in the world. Endemol are the company that bought us leading entertainment shows such as Deal or No Deal, and The Million Pound Drop which have all gone on to be leading global TV shows. Endemol are also behind the hit reality show Big Brother which now has prime time slots in over 70 different countries all over the world. Endemol have endlessly produced TV shows that are able to become global brands, the evidence is there with the shows I had just named and I feel they have more to come.

Influences

This is my first proper blog entry and I’m going to give you a brief overview of who are my influences, my favourite TV programmes and how I like to compose my videos and photography.

Influences:

Ever since I had developed an interest in Media production I have looked closer at the aesthetics and dimensions of TV programmes. I have noticed that certain shows are quite clearly shot on higher quality cameras. The evidence is obvious. Programmes like This Is England 86and This is England 88′ are very gritty and artistic. Compared to the film This is England, the TV programmes are a lot more thought out in terms of composition. The success behind the film and shows on TV really pays homage to the director Shane Meadows. His style and tone of film is unique compared to other directors. Shane Meadows’ style of filming has rubbed off on some other TV shows such as Shameless, the recent series are shot entirely differently to previous series. Even the photography of the promotional pictures are of high quality.

I have found that filming using this style of grittiness and artistic methods have made the outcome of the film top quality. Here’s a picture from This Is England  movie compared to the most recent mini series of This Is England 88′. The colour grading is clear, This Is England 88′  is more saturated giving the gritty effect.
